Introduction

ÇEKUD has brought environmental organisations, volunteers and institutions together since 1989, with work reaching all 81 provinces and more than four million saplings in the ground. Online, it was running on systems that had aged badly and could not measure a single donation. In seven months we gave it a new identity, rebuilt both of its sites, set up the tracking it had never had and ran its first measurable paid campaigns. Fifty days after the request, the new ÇEKUD went live everywhere at once.

The starting point

Five generations, and the same problems every time.

ÇEKUD’s donation site, Dikili Ağacım Var, had been through five generations since 2014: a WordPress blog theme, a Bootstrap template, ASP.NET, a page builder weighed down with slider plugins, then an empty JavaScript shell whose footer still read 2024. Each time the shell changed and the problems stayed. Certificates were never stored, only regenerated on every visit, and the amount printed on them did not always match what had been paid. Corporate balances were tracked outside the system. The English version had an English menu and nothing underneath it. There was no page for “fidan bağışı”, the phrase people actually search for, and no pixel to tell whether an ad had worked.

The systems

Rebuilt without breaking the past.

We rebuilt the donation platform on a modern web framework, installable on a phone like an app. Every donation, membership, corporate balance and certificate moved across, and the verification address on every certificate ever printed still works. Donors now choose from four species, 26 planting sites and more than 50 certificate designs, preview and download them instantly, verify them by QR code and hear back by email, SMS or WhatsApp. Companies get their own branded donation page with a quota, and schools and communities can pool a campaign together. Turkish and English run in parallel down to the campaign visuals. Analytics and the Meta Pixel load only after consent. In August cekud.org.tr followed, built for search from the first day, with canonical tags, hreflang, search and social metadata, Search Console and GA4 in place, a volunteer application, an events calendar and a carbon calculator based on İTÜ’s methodology.

Marketing and measurement

From unmeasured to 6.7 times.

Tracking went in during April and May: Meta Pixel, GA4, Google Ads conversion tags and value tracking for variable donations. The first paid campaigns went live in June. In their first three months they returned 6.7 times their cost in donations, built 6.3 million in reach and drove more than 55,000 page views on the donation platform. The Elazığ almond campaign alone returned 10.4 times its cost and passed 20,000 saplings in 34 days, with more than fifteen national and local outlets picking it up. We split the budget with intent. Two thirds went to donation campaigns, which produced nearly all of the return, and the rest built awareness, adding 5.1 million in reach. We also applied for Google Ad Grants and moved reporting to a monthly rhythm. The new cekud.org.tr scores 100 for SEO in Google’s Lighthouse audit.

Social

A following that grew with the brand.

Instagram grew from 12,700 followers in April to more than 15,000 in September, up 18 per cent in five months. The ads alone brought 60,000 profile visits and 1,147 new followers. When the new identity launched the handle became @cekudorgtr, and every profile picture and cover image changed in the same week, so the old logo disappeared from every channel at once.
